Frequently Asked Questions

  • It is key for you to be matched with a therapist with the personal style, energy and expertise that fits well for you, for your needs and for your comfort. This unique relationship — and your personal commitment — is crucial for success.

    Consultations come in two forms.

Usually, we start with a brief, complimentary 15-minute phone call to ask questions and get an initial sense of your needs and consider together the therapist who will likely you fit you best. You may wish to ask questions about our style and experience. We will certainly be curious about your situation and your hopes and expectations about therapy. There is no cost to you and no commitment to continue.

If it feels right for you, we will schedule a 50-minute initial appointment. An initial appointment is a paid therapy session. It is an opportunity for you to get a sense of what it is like to work with us, to get help right away and come to an understanding about the focus of therapy together and how best to proceed — with no obligation to continue after this first meeting.

  • We offer individual therapy sessions that are typically 50-55 minutes in length.

Family therapy sessions tend to be more effective at 75-90 minutes in length due to having multiple people in the session and allowing for everyone to be heard.

Sessions are typically scheduled on a weekly or biweekly basis.

  • Our discussions will remain confidential, subject to certain legal requirements to disclose in the case of risk of harm to yourself, harm to others, child or elder abuse or personal or professional legal proceedings. Insurance plans can sometimes require periodic disclosure of clinical updates for treatment certification purposes.

  • Rescheduling is always preferred over cancellation for consistency and effectiveness of sessions. We will make every effort to reschedule your session if something comes up. In the event that you are out of town, home-bound or need additional support, virtual sessions are available and encouraged.
However, unless you are experiencing a true medical emergency for you or for a loved one, all sessions canceled in under 24 business hours (i.e., 1 business day = Monday-Friday) are charged a cancellation fee. We will make every effort to reschedule canceled sessions within the same week, at no additional fee. If you did not provide 24 hours advance notice and we are not able to reschedule within that time frame, you will still be responsible for paying the cancellation fee.

  • Whomever you love, whatever you believe, however you express yourself, our practice welcomes and is made for all racial, ethnic, sexual and gender identities and relationship + life expressions.

Our practice understands that systemic oppression lives as trauma in the nervous systems of individuals from both dominant and marginalized groups. Microaggressions in psychotherapy perpetuate culturally oppressive systems and cause long-lasting harm. We are committed to ongoing knowledge seeking, reflection + action to deliberately oppose + interrupt racism. We believe that we can only address intergenerational trauma, complex PTSD + racial trauma, through practices rooted in anti-racism + social justice.
